. NEWROPEANS 2000, a highly symbolic happening

Newropeans 2000 takes place in the frame of the 15th Anniversary of the First Congress "Etats-Généraux of the European Students" (EGEE-1) and at the occasion of the French Presidency of the European Union.

Moreover, the asserted will of the Common institutions to make 2000 a year of transition towards a European Union founded on sound organisational and political basis, has lead thousands of young Euro-citizens born from the AEGEE experience to support the project of congress "New Europe, New Challenges, New Generations ", that Prometheus-Europe has organised.

This event also illustrated the necessity to associate more tightly citizens, (especially the youth), with all the procedures of the Union, while showing the great potential of creativity and know-how of the new generations.

The congress aimed to contribute to help with the emergence of this new Union that decision-makers and citizens are now wishing.

. NEWROPEANS 2000, catalyst of a new European enthusiasm

Much more than a mere happening, the congress Newropeans 2000 is a precursory event that initiates a new dynamic, by:

· Initiating the process " Towards a Common Democracy " : mobilising the elite and civil societies around the political project of democratisation of the European Union

· Inaugurating the European web-portal : www.newropeans.org

· Presenting two new trans-continental web-sites to put civilian societies together : Tiesweb.org (UE-US), Sitmed.org (Euromed) and spreading such tools all over the world

· Informing on the first conclusions of a CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research)-Newropeans survey on the communication and information habits of the European Student Networks

· Launching a " E-University vote " for the election in April 2001 of the first European Students Council meant to be the interlocutor of the European Institutions for the European University Policy

· Launching the First Edition of the Newropeans-Robert Schuman Award

· Publishing the Political Guide Europe 2020 : guide of strategic recommendations for the period 2000-2020, distributed to 10.000 political and administrative European leaders.

. NEWROPEANS 2000, the first gathering of the " European-Born " Generations

In 2000, the first " European-Born " generation is 43. Various sectors of the European society are now being energised by professionals for whom Europe is a natural dimension ; this characteristic makes these people especially predisposed to confront the major challenges faced by the European Union in the 21st century.

Newropeans has chosen to dedicate them this congress, since today it seems necessary for the new generations born after the creation of the European Community in 1957 to assert their commitments to building Europe and their desire to support reform initiatives. This aims at increasing Transparency, Efficiency and democratisation in the EU institutions.

. NEWROPEANS 2000, Horizon 2020

The contents of this event largely uses the work realised by the anticipation Unit of Prometheus Europe on the topic "How to manage the EU in 2020?". By applying a new method of aid to decision - the anticipation method - Europe 2020 seminars focused on three thinking directions at the horizon 2020 : reorganising the common administrative system, redefining the common political project and specifying the role of the EU in the world.

Newropeans 2000 was the occasion to give to the conclusions of these work the impact they deserve.

The congress is directly inspired from leading transcontinental projects like www.tiesweb.org in the transatlantic field (initiated and managed by Prometheus-Europe).
