| Newropeans
is the fruit of 20 years of dedication
to the European Union project
by citizens from all over Europe
aiming both at the progress of
European unity and common democracy.
These Newropeans - most of them
born after the signature of the
Rome Treaty - have most notably
succeeded in:
• 1985:
the creation of the first large-scale
pan-European student network,
AEGEE-EUROPE. In 2005, the
student network will celebrate
its 20th anniversary, proudly
counting more than 200,000
European student members since
1985.
•
1988: the creation of the ERASMUS
program was the fruit of the
lobbying by AEGEE’s leaders,
especially to François
Mitterrand. This first large
European program oriented toward
the younger generation has enabled
more than 1 million students
to study in European universities
outside of their own country.
•
1989: the first
transnational political campaign
for the European
Parliament with a party called
the “IDE: Initiative
for Democracy in Europe”.
•
1991 : « Tempus Scandal » (student
exchange program with Eastern
Europe) and first
public questioning of lack
of efficiency
and transparency
of European programs, together
with recommendations on new
methodologies for creation
and management of
European policies.
• During
the 90s, the maturation
of this group allowed them
to work as consultants to national
governments and to the EU
institutions.
• At
the end of the 90s, their
contribution to European
policy-making has been formalized through the
establishment of one of the
most respected trans-European think
tanks, EUROPE
2020, that
developed the first recommendations on
the necessary EU democratization.
•
October 2000 : organization of
the founding symposium « Newropeans
2000 : New Europe,
New Challenges, New
Generations »,
that gathered more than 2000
European
youth in Paris with prestigious
speakers from allover Europe.
• May
2002 : organization of EU-StudentVote,
the first Internet trans-European
election
•
October 2002 – July 2003 : organization of the Newropeans
Democracy Marathon that allowed
to elaborate 16 propositions
to re-found a democratic
EU, thanks to 100 conferences
in
100 towns of 25 European
countries, gathering more than
10,000 participants.
• October
2003 : Organization
of the first Grand Prix
Newropeans,
selected by nearly 1,000
European citizens, yearly rewarding the
actors of EU democratization. • Since
2003: creation of a unique
network reaching out nearly
100,000 European citizens, daily connected
through Newropeans
Magazine,
one of the most read trans-European
webzines.
