The
Internet revolution
is an unprecedented
opportunity
for developing
countries such
as those in
Africa to get
out of the cycle
of poverty...
To
seize upon this
opportunity
before it's
too late, the
European Union
can work together
with the African
countries in
a new partnership
to bridge the
so-called digital
divide. To achieve
this objective,
the EU should
show more support
for African
projects such
as E-education,
Virtual Universities,
etc..., both
in terms of
funding and
technical assistance.
The Okinawa
summit laid
the ground work
for this by
forming a Digital
Opportunity
Task Force (DOT
Force) to address
education, promote
sound government
policy, and
encourage public-private
partnerships.
Most importantly,
leaders of the
G-8 all agreed
that no one
should be left
behind in this
digital revolution:
"Internet
for All"
must become
a reality.
It is an investment
that will cost
the EU relatively
little considering
the unlimited
dividends that
could flow from
it: we'll all
live in a more
peaceful and
prosperous world.
