Well done on getting together
a stellar selection of speakers!
It must have been a lot
of work to organise, and
by and large it all went
OK on the night. How on
earth did you persuade the
French Foreign Ministry
to admit a student rabble
for drinks and canapés?
One
or two complaints, though.
Signing in at the Youth
Hostel was a shambles. And
the Saturday session would
have benefitted with a break
or two. I would have preferred
free coffee than a fancy
porte-documents.
My
second concern is whether
you, as organisers, think
the aims of the conference
have been achieved. "Je
construis l'Europe de demain"
it said on our T-shirts.
But did we? All our sessions
took the format of questions
and answers. We were lectured
for three days. The flow
of information was strictly
one-way. In my focus, the
Chairman, Adrian Taylor,
allowed his guests to answer
several questions at once,
giving them a free rein
to gloss over or ignore
altogether questions they
felt unable to answer adequately.
The audience was not allowed
follow-up questions.
At the end of the conference,
when the organisers were
paraded on stage and asked
how they thought their guests
had attacked the question
of Europe's future, none,
tellingly, were able to
pick out a single conclusion
reached by any of the Focusses.
A
final complaint is levelled
at the conference guests
themselves. An alarming
number seem to have no manners.
Saturday was a long day,
but to get up and leave
the amphitheatre in the
middle of someone's speech
is inexcusably rude, as
is openly reading the newspaper
while one is meant to be
listening.
Regrettably,
my last memory of the conference
will be sight of Alex Taylor
who'd made a valiant effort
at chairing Saturday's Closing
Session, thanking his speakers
and thanking us for coming,
while all around him people
were getting up and leaving
the auditorium!

if you read this, you did
a great job and thanks for
taking the time to support
the conference. |

Je profite de l'occasion
pour vous adresser toutes
mes félicitations
pour cette manifestation
J'ai assisté à
la journée du samedi
7 octobre et j'ai été
agréablement surprise
du niveau des interventions
(d'un point de vue technique),
de la qualité des
intervenants et des initiatives
entreprises, notamment les
recommandations que la TEAM
des newropeans transmetta
aux chefs d'Etat et de gouvernements
au sommet de Nice.
Par ailleurs, je voudrais
ajouter que l'intervention
du Président, et
tout particulièrement
le fait d'accepter de répondre
aux questions de la salle
était remarquable
dans la forme et dans le
fond et a premis de donner
une nouvelle impulsion à
cette troisième journée
de congré (toutes
mes félicitations
à la personne qui
en a eu l'idée).
Les interventions du Premier
Ministre et du Ministre
délégué
aux affaires Européennes
étaient instructives
et remarquables.
Les échanges avec
la salle ont été
fructueux.
Ces deux personnalités
nous donnent confiance en
l'Europe, et ont permis
de clôturer en beauté
ce congré très
réussi ...
PS : Les réponses
en anglais du Premier Ministre
ont été forts
appréciées
et ont une valeur symbolique
notamment dans le cadre
de l'année européenne
des langues.

I really enjoyed it and

in such a, or at least similar,
event in the future. I will

like this very good congres
organized or planned.
